The rise and rise of dubbed Turkish TV Dramas!

From handsome heroes to glamorous girls, powerful plots to charming culture, dazzling dresses to stunning sets; Turkish dramas have lucratively carved an unshakeable supremacy on Pakistan’s television screens.

Undoubtedly, the soft slushy magic of Turkish tales have effortlessly captivated the hearts of the viewers and thus, led to the ultimate end of the long reign of the typical  “Tulsi-Parvati” Indian plays.

Since 2012, a massive number of Turkish soap operas have hit the screens. Amongst them, there are few outstanding shows by the Turks that etched a memorable mark on the minds of the audience due to their highly-addictive nature.

The introduction of Turkish dramas into mainstream media is fairly recent and became the talk of the town right after the apparently controversial Turkish drama called ‘Ishq-e-Mamnoon hit the airwaves. Televised by a relatively unknown local TV channel called Urdu1, the drama was dubbed in Urdu in order to make it easier for our audiences to understand and soon became known for what many viewers considered to be questionable content by Pakistani standards.

Gallup Pakistan revealed on December 19,2012 that only 10% Pakistanis claim to have viewed Turkish dramas on local channels like Urdu One (60%) and Express Entertainment (33%) of which Ishq-e-Mamnooh tops as the most popular serial (41%). A poll conducted on the very next day on December 20,2012 by Gallup Pakistan revealed that Viewers expressed varied feelings about airing of Turkish dramas on Pakistani TV channels: 26% like it, 67% have mixed feelings about it.

According to Media logic’s official June 2015 monthly review statistics, Urdu 1 ranked as the third most-watched and commercially famous TV channel leaving behind multiple TV channels of Pakistan that air local TV shows. Urdu1 is known for airing Indian dramas and Turkish dramas throughout the day, and after they aired Ishq-e-Mamnoon, their ratings went sky-high. Their latest venture “Kaala Paisa Pyaar” also went on to gain high ratings and a large amount of the audience view this show during its airing time as the statistics by Medialogic show.peras have hit the screens.
